I would get the correct tool. my clutch was super tight coming off the engine, I had to use a bolt extension as well and it didnt work well at all, actually broke the socket and bent the 5/16 bolt I used for an extension before it finally came off. I pulled the large shim and its a little tight right now so I wont be doing much idling for a little while, my belt had nearly 2 inches of deflection when I started. If anyone needs to know the puller thread inside the clutch is 14mm 1.5 pitch, not the easiest thing to find at most places.
