BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2 Tire Review and Test
I recently had the pleasure of attending Discount Tire's test day of the all new BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2 tire out at the Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, TX.
When I first arrived, I was amazed at the track itself and the facilities available at the Motorsport Ranch. If you're a gearhead at all, you would really appreciate the track layout and all the amenities offered there.
BFG not only had four individual tire tests set up, but they also had four different makes of vehicles for each test. At the Dry Autocross test there were six different Chevrolet Camero SS cars. Two had the new Sport COMP-2's and the other four had either Kumho, Cooper or Yokohama tires mounted up. On the Wet Skidpad and Road Course Track Comparison, we drove VW GTI's and Subaru STI's. They had three versions of each vehicle, and each had a different tire on it as well. The final stage was the Zero-60mph-Zero test. On this test, they had a Dodge Challenger set up with just the BFG Sport COMP-2's. Additionally, each vehicle was "fitted" with a performance driving instructor that made sure I was getting the most out of the car as I put it through it's paces.
The greatest thing about this test was the back-to-back comparison that BFG and Discount Tire were able to offer. On each test we would get into a vehicle with the Sport COMP-2's, drive an agressive lap, stop in the pits and then get into the same model vehicle with the competitors' tires and then try to run the same aggressive lap. I say "try" because that's actually what it was! Every time I went out for a test, the Sport COMP-2's performed significantly better than the other tires in the test. It didn't matter if it was a wet skidpad, dry autocross or a 0-60-0, the COMP-2's performance over the other tires was obvious and significant!
During old school tire tests, one would receive a nice new set of tires in the mail, mount them up to a vehicle and then try and replicate certain tests that have been performed before. With this comes all sorts of fluctuations in weather, road surfaces and testing grounds that can change the outcome of the test drastically. This was definitely not the situation in this case.
It was truly amazing to experience the back-to-back differences in a controlled environment for each tire. It made it much easier to experience how they performed individually in each corner and the degree of response and feedback that each tire provided or didn't provide. The BFG Sport COMP-2's, lap after lap, would continue to provide more and more feedback and allowed me to increasingly feel more confident during each turn or braking scenario. This was even apparent during the wet sections of the course.
I think the normal assumption for most buyers looking for tires in this performance category would be that all tires would perform about equally, or at least that's basically what I thought. I assumed there might be some slight differences, but didn't believe that some guy off the street like myself could really tell a huge difference. After this first hand experience, I came away a believer. I can guarantee you that there is not only a large difference in feel and grip, but there is also a substancial difference in driver confidence with the COMP-2's!
To me, this is the most important feature in a performance tire because, if I can feel confident behind the wheel, then I'm more likely to drive faster, turn harder and brake later. All of this should equate to better times on a track, or simply provide better safety in an emergency situation on the street.
If you are in the market for a new set of Sport, Performance, Tuner or Hot Rod Tires then the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2's should definitely be at the top of your list!
