Clutch doesn't engage till high rpm

I bought a 08teryx with a big bore kit and lots of mods but one thing I don't like is the clutch kit in it. It engages hard and I would say doesn't engage till 2500+ rpm. What do I need to change out?

Sounds like you have an aftermarket clutch, I have a VFJ clutch and it does the same thing.

its caused by the spring used in the primary clutch. you can go back to the stock spring and will engage at a lot lower rpm.

my VFJ engages barely off idle, john told me it was hard on belts to have the clutch engage at a high rpm.

Okay thanks. If I change the primary spring will that change his it shifts out? Will it start bouncing off the rev limiter.

i don't think so. it just a softer spring allowing the sheaves to tighten up sooner on the belt

Yes changing to a softer spring will change the shift out RPM, probably not to much but it does. If you put a softer spring in, it will shift out at a lower RPM so no you will not be bouncing off rev limiter. 2500RPM sounds like you have a dalton orange and blue spring or a red and silver one, if they are dalton springs and clutch kit fo with the amber spring and it will engage alot softer.

What color primary spring are you running with your vfj? Did you change the secondary spring (if so what color)?

Glad to have found this topic. As I've been curious about engagement rpm (thats called stall right?).

My VFJ clutch seems to engage at a higher RPM he told me this was normal. Maybe the clutch/spring set ups are different for us who ride sand compared to those who do more dirt and mud.

A lot of people who race like some stall... Hits harder off the line. I've never liked it especially on the trail, it's aggrivating when trail riding. Especially of you are trying to ease over an obstacle.

Springs have 2 rates to them (start and finish rate)Start is for engagement(uncompressed) and finish is for final force (fully compressed) which helps govern final RPM

Weight (ramps) also governs final RPM so spring selection is important....
