You could have a couple things going on.
1st, if the idle is too high, it will grind going into gear, even with the shifter adjusted properly.
2nd. Due to the design of the trans and clutch system, you need to be direct when you put it into gear. What I mean is, don't casually move the shifter into gear. Be decisive and direct with the action of the shifter. This will reduce grinding as well.
3rd. The engine is rubber mounted, with a solid shift rod going to the shift tower that is bolted rigid to the chassis. The adjustment can be very finicky. Plus, the shift tower flexes, this all adds up to inconsistent adjustment.
4th. If all of the above is OK, it may have rounded off the engagement dogs on the gears if it was operated continually with some kind of problem. If this is the case, the engine will have to come out and have the cases split to replace the damaged gears.
