08 Wont go! Need some smarts shared!

Hello all, new member her been a lurker for a while finally have a problem I cannot fix.

A Quick intro: I have more mechanical skill than money. I am always buying broken quads and bikes and fixing them and keeping my sons and my two cousins kids, six in all, in decent bikes for little to no money. I also buy old boats and campers and whatever and fix them up and we use them for a while and sell them and upgrade to newer stuff. This allows me to keep my family stocked in toys with minimal out of pocket money. My cousin however is just the opposite, more money and NO mechanical skill. He likes to destroy stuff and I fix it for him. It works out well for us and I don't feel bad about borrowing a heavy duty truck or trailer or a tractor when I need a little something done around my place. Our property borders one another.

Anyway, he bought an 08 camo teryx new from the dealer and beat it until it wouldn't go any more, all in the name of fun, and it was fun. It also lasted longer than most, pretty tuff little unit the teryx is. It stopped with about 930 miles on it and about 120 hrs. I don't think it was ever serviced at all during its life, maybe got an oil change but I doubt it. Well when it quit going he parked it outside and left it for a while, maybe a year give or take. I finally got him to bring it over to my shop so i could fix it. He said it ran ok just felt like something was holding it back, it just wouldn't go. It actually ran like crap, hard to start and wouldn't idle. It is completely stock. First thing I did was clean the fuel tank out and clean the carbs and the air filter and replace the front diff cable that was stuck. I also ordered the primary clutch puller bolt and made a secondary clutch spring compressor tool from stuff laying around the shop. Now it starts easily and idles fine revs some on up into the rpms. But it will not go past about 20 mph. I have tried every combination of secondary clutch shim combination from the factory two shims to no shims and its still the same. the belt rides just a bit above the secondary pulley (1/16 or so) when at its tightest and squeals in gear and wants to move forward so I feel its getting tight enough. After this and no success I bought a new HD Belt from Hunter Works and tried that with similar results, still no go! Gonna do the valves next but it starts so easily I dont feel like that is it. It truly feels like it is just governed to only run about 20mph but I know better, It wont even spin the tires when hammered from a dead stop in gravel. Ive read about limp mode on here but not on an 08. Somebody has to have an idea where to go. We have no decent dealers anywhere close. Someone throw me a bone, Ill try it, gotta get this thing going. Sorry for the long post just wanted everyone to know my situation and what ive done.

Clogged exhaust or not getting the correct vaccumn to the carbs. What is the top RPMs while in neutral with no load?

Does it have the parking brake retarder on the 08? If not does the engine brake up at full throttle? Sounds to me like maybe a carb problem...

Good Ideas, Please keep em coming.... I will check the carbs out again and check the tailpipe for dirt dobbers. In neutral from an idle it revs clean and smooth when the throttle is mashed and revs high as I want it to just setting and free revving, not sure of the rpm, it has no tach and I havent dug out a shop tach. Considered it being stuck in limp mode from the loose belt but apparently thats only on FI models 09 and later. I don't know about the brake retarder or anything with the engine braking, haven't looked into that or do you mean brake up as in engine stumbles coughs etc. It runs smooth into the higher rpm range. If its a carb problem I could only see it being the slides not opening all the way, or maybe the cable isn't adjusted to pull the linkage all the way, Ill check it out. Also seems like the remote idle screw under the seat has little affect. Think Ill pull the cover off the linkage and double check all that.

when you cleaned the carbs did you pull the mains out and blow air through them?

i had a similar problem after letting mine sit for a few months. it was a combination of the carb slides not opening up all the way and the bad gas ate the seals out of that dam vacume fuel pump. the fuel pump would keep up fine in neutral then fall flat on its face in gear.

Been too busy to get back to this thing. Gonna have some time coming up. I like the fuel pump idea. The pump seems really noisy and seems to run along time. Any way of testing it or just replace it? Also wondering about the speed sensor $kidoo mentioned. Does the 08 have this? Thanks everyone

The noise your hearing is the k.e.b.c.(engine brake resetting). The speed sensor is under the secondary clutch(Probably had to disconect it to get the clutch cover off) .Should have 2 /3 wires going to it.if its defective or if there is a broken wire it will put you in limp modeGet your self the manual and it tells you how to test it and the wires...good luck.
