Running out of fuel

This past weekend we went out to Glamis, with my newly adjusted Dalton Clutch (went from 3 screws to 1) and did alot better going up the hills. It does run at alot higher RPM's (aprox 7200 while accel and 5500 when backshifting). But, a strange thing happened 3 times to us. When we were on it going up a very long dune, and riding very hard, the engine ran itself out of fuel. My AF gauge went super lean, it started popping, lost all power and almost stalled. We turned around while going up the hill, and coasted down to the bottom. It would need to sit there and idle for about 30 secs or so, then it would be good to go. It wasn't a tempature issue, because it was running at 195-198 ish while running it hard.

Has anyone ever had this problem? Vapor lock maybe? I was going to rip apart the carbs next weekend to see if maybe there was a peice of sand or something in there that would get sucked up into the jet.

Has anyone ever had to change out the fuel pump?

It may seem silly, but I would check your gas tank vent. They love to get sand in them and stop working. It's happened to my atv's and did the exact same thing, I wasted time jetting and cleaning carbs. I spent 10 bucks on a new vent and everything was back to normal.

It's strange that you mention that. I did notice that when I opened up the cap to make sure that there was fuel alot of air came out. I will give that a shot. Thanks for the advise
