2012 teryx making funny clicking noise
Hey everyone I'm new here so hopefully this is the best place to post this question. I just purchased a 2012 teryx a few weeks ago and took it out a couple of days ago for the first time. While riding everything seemed fine until I started going over big rocks. The rocks were fairly big and was working the suspension a bit. Anyway Im not sure if it was just while going over rocks down hill or also uphill that it did it. But while going downhill over these large rocks I heard a fairly loud clicking sound (sounded maybe slightly similar to when you put the machine into gear). Kawi customer service was no help since they are not mechanics. My dad said it sounded like it was the suspension making the noise. The dealer I bought it from said it sounds like the brake pads were prob moving around (what he said is based on what I told him over the phone though as he hasnt actually looked at it). Anyone know whats causing this sound? Thanks everyone!

it will always make some noise when putting it in gear. the shift tower is not tied into the engine mount so they move opposite of each other especially when jumping or doing heavy crawling. with it in neutral the light on the dash should be on adjustment is good. alot of us just notch the shift gate to allow it to move around.

reply to Fuelatv
FuelATV mentioned the Kebc and clutch which brings up another question. When crawling over lots of decent size rocks would the Kebc make an engaging sound that sounds like a click? Also does the clutch make a click sound often when engaging or disengaging by itself while crawling? The sound would go click click pause for a second then more clicks. It happened pretty much non stop while crawling. And wouldn't the clutch stay engaged even when going down hill over rocks slowly since the engine brakes when letting off the throttle? Or would it disengage downhill until I gave it throttle? I don't really know much about these machines yet. So thanks for being patient with me. Oh and if it is the clutch or kebc is that okay to hear those noises?
So I hoped in my teryx even though its in the bed of my truck started it and with it in neutral it didn't read adjustment is good. While in it in my truck bed I also noticed that when I would put it in high I couldn't shift down to neutral. So shift linkage must be off? Also would this likely cause the machine to want to try and shift, causing the sounds I'm hearing while crawling? Last edited by BrandonP; 10-03-2011 at 03:03 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Make sure the neutral light comes on when the shifter is seated in the notch, if it goes on either half way out either way that signals an adjustment needs to be made. You keep mentioning rock crawling, that is primarily what I do and if you happen to bottom out hard on a rock it will cause your linkage to move around. I have had to adjust mine more than once on the trail due to a hard "landing" on a rock.
Also, if you are not used to the KEBC, get used to it. It does make a clicking sound. Its normal. |

If you fall to low RPM's for any reason the clutch will disengage. Also the KEBC will engage and disengage at low RPM's. I would imagine that you had both items working if you were rock crawling.
YES, you could also hear the gears grinding a little bit if the linkage is not adjusted properly. You may want to look at a couple things that may help your cause. 1. frame braces front and rear-helps to minimize any frame flex 2. Funco Shift tow eliminator brackets - relocate the shift tow mounts to the motor 3. shift linkage rod 4. grind the shift tower locks a little bit to allow the linkage to float a little bit more |

Thanks everyone
Hey I just wanted to tell all of you thanks for helping out. Sounds like I need to look at adjusting the linkage and maybe not worry about the sound I'm hearing. Guess it's kinda normal from what I've been hearing.

Any UTV or SxS will do. No bias here, although everyone I ride with has a RZR. I've got a rhino also. We'll be doing different degrees of trails, we'll help you along if you need it!
Do you have long travel? We'll be riding friday-sunday on both weekends. We normally meet in the Archway Inn parking lot before we head out to the trail. Call with any question. Lanse 801-589-0523 |
