Are you using the choke? Are you on the gas? Without seeing what you are doing, it sound like you are giving it to much gas and that is the giving you the smell.

After its warmed up, it should take very little throttle or none to start. Once running, does it idles fine? Is your fuel good/carbs clean?

Sounds like you need to make some adjustments...Check that the throttle pedal moves smoothly from full open to close. You should have 5~10mm play in the pedal. If it sticks lubricate the cable...Once you get it started, pump the peddle a couple of times, does it return to the same idle speed? If not you should adjust the throttle cable or the cable could be damaged. You might have to adjust the idle speed. I'm leaning that the cable is too loose and your not getting any fuel or very little to keep the engine running. Based on you got to keep your foot on the pedal, make sure that is correct...do you have any mods? Air Box/exhaust?

I don't know how many miles you have on your Teryx. Do your valves need adjustment?
Have you turned your idle up slightly?
