We chose to mount the relay under the seat near where the electrical stuff is located. That way, it is out of the elements. We found the swiched ground wire under the seat, same as in the pouch in the rear. Used that to trigger the relay. So the wires at the back were not used as is. But to simplify the install, you can use them if you mount the relay in the rear or extend the wires to where the relay is located.

Generally, you use an automotive style 12 VDC 30 amp relay. You can buy a harness to connect to the bottom or use spade connectors. Here is a diagram of basic light relay circuit. #30 on the relay is your positive fused lead from the battery. #87 is a lead out from the relay to the positive wire of your lights. #85 and #86 are for the 2 wires in the pouch. What happens is that when you shift into reverse, #85 and #86 activate a coil inside the relay which closes the contacts allowing the power from #30 to go to #87 and out to your lights. It is a good idea to run a ground wire to your lights also from the battery rather than relying on the frame for ground.

For the lights, we installed some Warn Trail Lights in an EMP bumper. They are 35 watts each and provide a lot of light in the rear when switched on.

One note, if you do use a relay, be sure to connect it properly. What you can do is connect everything but leave out the fuse for the light power. Turn the machine on and shift into reverse. The relay should click if it is wired correctly.

What is the max amp that the factory switch should withstand as far as light wattage

i ran had the same problem and blew a reverse switch until I rewired using the instructions above. the problem is that the pigtail at the back is not designed for lights, it is designed for a backup buzzer/beeper. it will not handle the wattage of a reverse light for long.

I have been running an LED type reverse light off the rear pigtail with no problems for a while now, It is made to be a reverse light so it puts out plenty of light and is low draw.

Where is the stock pig tail, what color wire? I looked on my 09 when I first got it and was not able to locate it. I would wire up a relay no matter what, its very easy to exceed the maximum current abilities of stock switch.

Is there already a switch installed from the factory? Or does it need to be installed?
