Why add a windshield?

I know this may be a dumb question but I'm going to ask it. Why do you all add a windshield to your ride? If you ride with a helmet and goggles do you still need the windshield? I'm not against it just curious if I need one if I always have a helmet on and use goggles.

The riding I will be doing is mainly in the woods, some mud but nothing major. Also do you get a windshield that hinges or just a solid windshield? What are the pros and cons to each?

Windshields control air flow through the cabin. If it's hot you'll want max airflow and little or no coverage in front. If you ride in late fall or winter that windshield makes a major difference on freezing days. If you ever ride behind motorcycles or other riders you'll appreciate any protection up front if somebody kicks rocks back at you.

We get caught up in the 10,000 to 11,500 foot mountain range where freak rain and hail storms hit in the middle of summer days and it's nice to be able to point into the direction of oncoming storm and block out weather. It does more than a helmet or goggles ever could.

Here particularly during turkey seasons the roads are like talcum powder. With a front and rear windshield really cuts the dust down in the cab. don't usually wear a helmet and a wet April snow makes a believer out of having a windshield I like the split ones open it up for summer.

I was curious about the same thing until I went out and got behind some jeeps on one of the main dirt roads where we ride. Wish I had one. My problem is that they are so damn expensive!

The helmet and goggles takes care of part of the problem, but it's still much more pleasant to not be blasted by wind when cruising at higher speeds. Rain, mud, and snow make it even worse....get over about 20 mph when it's 45 degrees and drizzling rain and you will understand. When I first got my Teryx it did not have a windshield and went riding with my dad who had a windshield on his Ranger. It was a huge difference in overall comfort between the two machines.

I prefer a folding or split windshield. My SuperATV full flip allows you to just reach over and open or close the windshield when driving. Jump on the road to get to the trail and close it, then when going slow on the trail flip it open. You can also remove the top portion in a few minutes for those days when it's hot and you are just staying on slower trails. That way you don't have to worry about tree limbs and stuff catching it. That is the only downside is that with it flipped up you do kinda' have to keep an eye on it on tight technical trails.

We debated a windshield for over a year before purchasing. I was lucky enough to have friends with both a full and a halfie. We decided the halfie best met our needs. They each had pros and cons. Full windshield more protection better in cool weather worse to keep clean. Halfie better cooling in hot weather some protection and I can see over it so it's not as important how often I clean it on rides. I prefer no windshield my wife wanted a full. We compromised.

I picked up the SATV half windshield a couple months ago. SO much better at controlling air flow at all speeds and we always wear helmets when we're out. Living in AZ, I don't really need to worry about staying warm during the winter months. The half windshield works great.

I like riding without a windshield . Feel the air and the bugs in my mouth. We use helmets, so already have eye protection in the form of goggles. Plus noggin is protected.

Is everybody here wearing helmets by law? My state has no helmet law for anything once you turn 18.

If I had to wear a helmet I prolly wouldn't ride. 99.9% of where we ride is outlaw trails anyway(illegal, but no one cares) ironically the one time I was stopped by forestry the guy said "u can't ride here and if you do you have to wear a helmet"lol we just trail ride.we don't fire on play hills or anything. If we went fast or rode out west might be a different story

Same here, but since we ride with my 9 year old son, we try to set a good example.

Been a long debate as to helmet or not. After a lifetime in the medical field it doesn't matter whether you drive slow, fast, reckless, safe accidents happen and there is no turning back, faced with an injury or death. Your mileage may vary.

You are 100% right. However helmets may make it safer ,but they don't make it safe. The only totally safe way to enjoy off-roading is to watch it on tv. I've been trying to think,I'm pretty sure I've never ever seen a person on a sxs wear a helmet where we ride. Atv or dirt bike, yes. After all, life is the leading cause of death.

I don't wear a helmet, it has a roll cage, and I am wearing a seat belt. Never seen anyone wear a helmet in a side by side.

I wear one to keep cold air out. Even in the evening it can get cool. Plus rain.

I wear safety glass, usually.

I won't argue with anybody that wearing a full face helmet is the safest thing to do.....but will also say that if you use that argument everybody should wear one in a car driving down the highway. Most people I ride with do not wear a helmet in a SxS but do carry one with them. They will put it on when trying something crazy like a big hill that has the potential for a multi-roll crash. I do make the kids wear full face helmets when doing anything but cruising around farm fields and with that I wear a half motorcycle helmet just to be a good example. I always have some sort of eye protection unless cruising around the yard or running down to the neighbors house.
