2018 teryex 4 burning belt smell

So since i bought this bike new it has a rubber burning belt smell every time i stop . At first i thought its just the belt breaking in but my buddy bought a new one same time i did and his does not have the smell like mine . Im kinda scared of blowing the belt far back in the woods because its bin over heating for the last 800km yes only 800km on this thing .any advice would be appreciated

Yeah its got nothing to do with using low gear. I have owned a rzr and a Yamaha wolverine sxs and countless 4 wheelers i know when to use low and high lol. I have never had a belt driven bike that you would smell rubber burning every time you stop. I have replaced belts and clutches lots of times but this is still under warranty and am afraid if i take it apart they wont cover anything. Has anyone else bin encountering this ???

Take it back to dealer, it's under warranty, and make them fix it from running hot

What speeds are you running in low vs high etc? These get the belt smell quickly with high range and under 20mph speeds up hills and in 4x4 etc. I didn't like how high the revs sounded at 20mph in low but its been a good change for my teryx4. The owners manual doesn't actually tell me what speeds but census shows most say under up too 20mph is a good low range. I get it, it sucks having to stop but just something to look for.

My dads rzr 900 s responds quiet a bit differently in low vs high compared to my teryx4 le. Im sitting right under 900 miles so far and the belt small happened twice when I was using high range when I shouldn't have etc.

There is always a chance the clutch/belt is off are you the original owner? larger tires with stock clutch etc?

Also you WILL NOT VOID the warranty if you take the cover off and inspect the clutch/measure the belt. You could always blow it out with compressed air and see if its go an unusually large amount of brake dust inside.

Im the original owner stock tires .i have my wife and my 6 year old and 11 year old and a cooler full . The first time it started i was running along a dirt road and there was a couple good hills along it at the end i was cruising along 50km but had to push the peddle down further to keep that speed up and when i stopped you could smell the belt .and ever since then every trip you can smell the belt when i stop.

We were out Saturday and i could feel the power loss when i was in low going threw a mud hole . It was real lazy and i had to push the peddle down quite a ways to get the power up. Maybe the clutches are sticking or the engine brake is dragging.

You need to replace the belt. HIGHLY doubt its your clutch or engine brake sticking. The belt just got glazed. Think similar to overheating a disc break system and the pads get that layer built up and now they don't work worth a crap. 4 people on a hill at 30-ish mph probably should have been low range at 25mph. I know it sounds dumb but the teryx4 just doesn't have the same power as the rzr's even the 4drs. Change the belt and im wagering the smell goes away. Wear a little mask and blow out the cover too before hand.

Really going down a dirt road at 50km with 4 people in with me and pull over and put it low and drive up the slight grade on the dirt road lol. My buddy has the same year and color as mine he was with me with his family staying right behind me and his didn't have any smell and it still doesn't.

Gearhead, Justin is right about the belt getting glazed and maybe leaving buildup on our sheaves. I would change the belt out with OEM belt and check both your sheaves for build-up or grooves. If you find nothing then clean both sheaves and scotch brite them before installing the new belt.

GEARHEAD I know you probably know all this but putting the info out for the newbies!

I here what you are saying i have done plenty of clutches. I am going to take it to the dealer its got 3 years of warranty. But if i cant even drive up a hill on a dirt road keeping my speed at 50km a hour with 3 passengers without burning or glazing the belt i dont think i want this machine. And believe me i love the teryex 4 . I hope its a problem with the clutches this bike only has 800km on it .this has only bin my 4th trip out .

You keep saying "a hill" how long/steep? The teryx4 is not nearly as powerful as the rzr plain and simple (yes the rzr has its own issues and so does the artic cat, and yamaham etc. The 4dr rzr even without the turbo is on a totally new level in comparison. The teryx4 is a middle ground between utility and sport. It wasn't designed to take 4 people up a steep hill in high range. They just don't have the power. The teryx4 is like a hopped up mule at best. Its fun and much more affordable don't get me wrong. but its a 780ish motor pushing a 1700lb chasis with 4 people etc.
I feel the teryx4 really should have been a 1000 and it would have been a perfect rig. I like my teryx4 but next year I may re look into a more powerful unit esp if I leave it stock and just change a much easier belt more often anyways etc.

Hope everyone understands im not bashing the teryx4 because I do like mine but I fear it has limits lower than I was hoping and people expect something half the price of a rzr to perform the same.

Dropped it off at the dealer today. Told them they can have it all week. I will be out of town for work .the service manager told me he has not ran across any problems with the belts since 2014 but will open up the belt cover and investigate and clean everything well they are in their..
