New to the Kawasaki family. Anyone having issues hooking up a winch? Dealer says you can't hook anything directly to battery on the new Teryx. What am I missing? Same goes to sound bar. Cant hook to battery or it pops a fuse. PLEASE HELP!!! Been around riding my entire life never had this issue.

Welcome Congrats on the new Teryx someone more elec. Savy will have to give a little help I'm thinking it needs to hook to a designated power point (fuse bar) ?

I would be curious to know more about this. Right off hand I can't imagine how it would pop a fuse if you hooked something to the battery.....generally to pop a fuse it would have to be inline with the circuit pulling the load??? Also not sure what the difference is between hooking directly to the battery and hooking to a different power point as you are still pulling the same load from the battery. You would need a BIG fuse bar to power a winch. Not like you can tap the factory fuse box or even most typical aftermarket boxes as a winch just draw too much current. The typical SxS size winch should be expected to draw upwards of 200 amps. Typical automotive blade fuses usually only go up to around 30 amps.

Supposedly, Kawasaki did something different on the 2020 so nothing can be connected directly to the battery. This is what Kawasaki and the dealer told me when I called them. Kawasaki told me you have to add an accessory fuse box that they currently don't offer yet. I installed an after market fuse box but this didnt work. It was worth a shot. All the 2020 Teryx4's I have seen on the trail dont have the winch installed yet. Going on a big ride this wknd. Hopefully i can get some info from other riders as well.

As said above, I'm really curious about this. I was just looking at the Kawasaki website and list the winch plate and winch as available accessories for a 2020 but they are the exact same part numbers as previous years, and doesn't mention anything about the above. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I'm wondering if it is just some type of funky connector at the battery versus the old standard terminals you can simply attach another ring terminal to? If I get the chance I will swing by the local Kawi dealership near work and see if they have any 2020's sitting on the floor.

I can tell you from an electrical stand point that makes no sense at all. The only way to blow a fuse is to put current through it and you are not going through any fuse by connecting directly to the battery. And as someone above said, a winch pulls a ton of current and no fuse panel or power bar is going to be able to handle it.

That's a neat idea but one expensive hunk of metal! Haha.

Sounds to me like the OP's dealership is just trying to drum up business for themselves by trying to make people have them install the winch. That or the person at the dealership is confused between hooking it straight to the battery vs a bus bar with an inline fuse. Do the 2020's have a factory bus bar on them maybe?

For real!

Seriously, that whole winch thing is making no sense...

I have a dealer who sales Kawa and Canam. Service manager scolded me for not reading owner manual about 20hr service. He was assuming more then just fluids/oil changes and dealer should do it for warranty. HE was WRONG but I suspect he was correct in regards to Canam as most war claims are canams!!! I should disclose we don't play well together... Everyone else at dealer are great.

I just finished installing the winch om my 2020 Camo, battery direct to the relay and picked up a ignition hot in the fuse box no issues what so ever, works like a charm. I find it pretty weird that they would say anything regarding
hook up to the battery unless the batteries they install now are crap and can't handle the draw.
