popping noise in 4wd

I have an older 2510 diesel that makes a popping noise and has a noticeable jerk in the front axle, only in 4wd.I did have a bad left hand axle and have replaced it, I thought that was the problem but it still does it. I can jack all four wheels off the ground and run it on jack stands and it won't make any noise. Any suggestions, Thanks.

Are you on pavement or hardback dirt?
The front drive axles will get in a bind on pavement, as you turn one tire will have to travel farther than the other putting the axels in a bind, Then one tire will slip, releasing the bind. That might be what you are hearing.....

If you are on a hard surface, I would not have it in 4x4 mode.

It is popping in the field or in gravel however it doesn't seem as bad in the gravel.

It makes the popping sound and you feel the jerk going straight not in a turn.
