Help, purchasing a 2007 teryx

Hi, currently looking at a used 2007 Teryx with 300h on it, purchase price is really appealing but the seller tells me that the head of the engine has been rebuilt a few years back costing $1400. Is this common or something I should worry about?

Brad, you have a VERY RARE Teryx if it is indeed a 2007 model! (since the first model year was actually 2008) All joking aside, many of the first Teryxs had dirt ingestion issues due to a rather poor design and poor maintenance of the original foam air filter. This in turn ruined the valves/valve seats and rings. The compromised rings allowed compression blowby into the crankcase which blew oil into the airbox, sometimes starving the engine for oil and seizing it. Uni Filter makes a good replacement filter that clamps securely to an adapter that is added to the stock airbox. Many people also added a siphon break which basically collected oil before it got to the airbox and then allowed it to drain back into the crankcase. Many threads on the subject I'm sure in the archives.

Hahaha that explains why I couldn’t find much info. Thanks for your reply, it was very informative on the issue.

Had a look at it late yesterday, it Isn’t in as good of condition as the pictures showed. So I have decided against this one.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I should look out for when purchasing a used teryx?

As you decided on the "2007", overall condition is sometimes a good indicator or the previous owners usage and maintenance. 2008s are carbureted, the rest of the first Gen. Teryx 2s are fuel injected.(2009 thru 2013). I have a 2011 that I bought new, carefully broke it in(not exactly by the manual) and have faithfully kept up on air filter maintenance, oil changes etc. Mine has never had "valves tightening up" issues which causes lack of compression/hard starting, or blowby and oil consumption. My point is the 1st Gen Teryx 2s can be reliable and now cheap machines if properly cared for. I'm sure there are low mileage, well cared for machines out there.

Good luck in your search, Mike
