I’ve been through almost every post in this forum and I need some more help. I’ve been having starting issues with my 08 Teryx since I bought it used a couple months ago. A lot of people mentioned fuel delivery issues, I installed a new electric fuel pump. Now might sound strange but the only way I can get it to start is to blow in the hose coming off the bottom of the carbs. Carbs are totally clean, cleanest I’ve ever seen honestly. Any ideas on why you would have to blow in the hose to get it to start? As far as I know it’s just a vent hose? Need some help! Runs fine after blowing in the hose too? Very strange.

Do you realize there is a choke knob, I know that there are people who have grown up with F.I. and have 0 knowledge of how to start a vehicle with a carburetor. That's the only scenario I can come up with that blowing in the vent tube to start it makes any sense. Blowing in the vent tube would pressurize the float bowl, possibly forcing fuel through the carb and acting as a primer? Just a W.A.G., as you said STRANGE! How many PSI is your fuel pump? You need a low pressure pump for a carburetor, not 60 PSI like for F.I.

Good Luck, Mike

Hey Mike, I realize it makes no sense that’s why I’m even making this post. I did grow up with carburetors and I’m fully aware of the choke as well so thanks.

That is weird. Could the float gaskets be leaking air by them? I know mine needed the valves adjusted. It's a real pain to do, but it got mine starting easier. Do you have an aftermarket air cleaner that may require rejetting?

These are just guesses. I'm no expert, just kind of guessing off what I've learned by working on my 08.

I’m now having a problem where it will start once while cold and idles a few seconds and then dies and will not start again. Cranks over but no fire. Is this common with valves that need to be adjusted? What causes the valves to get out of adjustment? Thanks you!

They need adjusting every few thousand miles. I think the stretch a bit. Lots of people replace them because of that. But, I bet it's a pain. I'm not sure about it losing fire. I doubt that has anything to do with the valves.

A compression test will tell you whether or not your valves are fully closing. With a warm engine the usable range in the F.S.M. is 36-66 psi. This seems like a low number because of the KACR (Kawasaki automatic compression release) . The valves tend to wear into the valve seats over time, especially if the motor ingested a lot of dirt/sand through the somewhat poorly located/designed air filter on the 1st Gen. Teryx. The initial valve clearance inspection is recommended at 1,200 miles, and 2500 mile intervals after that.

My old o8 was bitch to start. I added manual primer pump like for a boat tank. Pump it until it’s hard and I also installed a car battery (optima yellow top). Never had an issue starting it ever again. Wish I would have done it the day I bought it.

Where in the line did you put the primer bulb? Before or after the mechanical pump?

I only ask because I am searching the posts thinking about doing the electric fuel pump, but I don’t want to hassle with regulators, rejetting, etc…

Best five minute carburetor upgrade to be found.

You can’t believe all the post’s I’ve dug thru about converting to an electric fuel pump, regulators, and rejetting.

This solved the carburetor issues in literally minutes. Mine hadn’t cranked over in about a month (if I go longer than a week without starting it the fuel line bleeds down back to the tank). So, two weeks ago I went out to try and start it. Ran my big car battery down. I put the charger to it, and today I installed the boat primer. 3 minutes later it was up and running.
Thanks so much .
