I had a few hours free before dinner this afternoon and figured now was a good time to finally do the fuel vent mod. Took a while to decide how and where I wanted to route the hose, but ended up going with what most do: under the center cowl.

I made quick work with it and figured it was a good time to go ahead and change the fuel filter. I thought there was a slight decrease in power and zippyness on my last ride... with the vent now modded to prevent sucking dust in, it would be good to start with fresh fuel filter on there as well. I changed it before so, the task was complete quite easily and quickly. The filter was a little brown but didn't "look bad".

With the vent modded and a fresh fuel filter in, I thought it would make good sense to go ahead and drain the tank for inspection and get some fresh fuel in there... The tank was about half full and was quickly siphoned out. The tank was free of any dirt or debris, and the gas looked pretty good... The gas will be fed to my lawn mower.

Since the gas tank was empty and the fuel connections were not yet hooked up, I realized I was almost to the point of getting access to the belt housing... may as well yank the tank out; at least I'll be very familiar with the tear down process and I can take a shop vac to the sxs and suck out all the dust and twigs that were living in my machine's belly.

At this point, I cleaned up and went in for dinner.

I'll be cracking open the housing tomorrow to blow out the belt dust and have a look-see. My machine has 1860 miles and I'm the second owner... It looks like the previous owner took good care of it, no signs of mud, water, or abuse. I've never taken it through any of that stuff during my ownership either... It's been mostly easy/moderate firebreak mountain trails and babied.

Here's my question: Are there any signs that I need to look for when inspecting my belt? Should I go ahead and just replace the darn thing since I'm in there as preventative maintenance? (I don't have a spare belt, and It'll probably have to be ordered in)

Well... belt inspection was (thankfully) uneventful. It was surprisingly easy and relatively self explanatory. I wish Kawasaki designed the machine so that the tank could be removed without removing the back bar. The belt looked good, no visible tears, marks or missing teeth. I could tell the housing had been opened before, but had no way of telling of the belt was already replaced. Its amazing at how much dust I blew out of the clutch housing!

I'm glad I took the time to do this process - it has taught me a lot and I feel like a belt change is very doable DIY when the time comes.

With a fresh fuel filter, new gas, vent modded, dust free belt housing, and new air filter installed, I decided to complete a comprehensive service and picked up a oil filter, some Rotella T4, 90w synthetic gear oil, and hydraulic oil, and 2 pairs of plastic service ramps... Instead of making the 1.5 hour drive to get it serviced at the dealership, I'll start doing it myself.
