Hi Guys. Just looking for some thoughts on security for my T-rex on a utility trailer. Will be towing it to AZ from Canada this winter and likely 4 nights in motels. Can lock tailgate and chains etc but with battery grinders these days that's not really going to work if somebody wants it. What about those tire clamps? Anyone use them? Or any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

If you have the typical design trailer with side rails and a fold up tailgate one of the best things to do is park it so you can't get the tailgate down. Such as backing up against a building or tree. However that may not always be an option. For keeping the tailgate secured up plan on having a couple different devices that need defeated...make one very obvious and visual that they will go after first, then have a secondary device that is hidden or at least hard to find. Thieves don't want to spend a lot of time on it so having them waste time cutting off one lock/chain/etc... only to find out the gate still won't drop can discourage them. Replacing the normal pins with bolts and lock nuts can make it pain also. While not convenient for everyday use it's probably worth it if you are going to be on the road for 4 nights before needing to unload it.

I use a couple of those coated cable locks:

one keeping the trailer to the truck, one keeping the side by side to the truck, and then take off a random tire. I kept the tire hidden so I don't have to bring it in the hotel. Is it overboard? depends who you ask but these days people would steal anything not tied down.... When I was in the military/stationed in California we even locked spare tires and utility attachments down for field exercises because locals would try to sneak off with stuff. no one reads the "military exercise in progress, live ammo blah blah signs" anyways.

Could always just remove the battery and use chain/cable to lock it down etc.

Sounds good. Hadn't thought of bolts to replace the gate pins. Good idea. That and plan t put two disk locks on the front wheels, have a set from our bikes and a couple of cable locks. Like they say if they want it they will get it. Appreciate the ideas, thanks.

Plan to use those as well. Usual stops are at Ft. Wayne, Joplin and Santa Rosa at the same motels we usually stop at, well lit, parking right in front of office and Santa Rosa does have afence I can back up to. Appreciate the info. Thanks.

Might also consider a "cheap" cover? Out of sight, out of mind. Where as an exposed machine might attract attention, something covered in black might not, so much?I agree with placing several methods of attachment to discourage, but as mentioned above, don't forget keeping the trailer locked to the tow vehicle.
When I used to tow my sand rail and stay over night, I welded a length of large chain to the center of the trailer bed and a ring to the underside of the rail tubes. It was a pain enough just to lock and unlock, it would have been a real bit** to get under there and cut it.
Sorry state of affairs that we need to have a discussion like this, but,...

Thanks Dave. My tailgate attaches with a 1" dia bar held in with a 'r' clip so I drilled it out and re-installed with a padlock, plus made up two plates and welded them to the trailer so when the gate is up it can be padlocked both sides. It's a 6X12 tandem so not much room to get at the inside of the front wheels where the two disk locks will be, near impossible to get them off as well. Like you said one can only do so much and I think I done it...LOL Thanks again for the input.

I don't know if you have a T4 or a T2, but if you have a T2 and are open trailering, make sure you remove the side panels and stow them safely. They are at risk for blowing off at high speeds like on interstates.

Just my T2 cents worth :icon_thumleft:

Yes. I read that on a thread here a while ago. Then checked the panels and sure enough they seem a little wobbly....will store them in the truck for travel. Thanks

We use Kryptonite ATV locks on our side by side this past weekend and had no issues. We wrapped the cord around the base of the ATV and the trailer on the back and the front. Found a pack that came with two locks and cords. These are well made and would take lots of effort to break the lock and cut the thick cord. A thief is not going to want to take the time to do that. We parked at the hotel we were staying that allowed for trailer parking and had lots of security cameras.

Yeah the more devices the better I guess. Will look into them, probably Amazon has a ton. Right now I have the coated steel cables with good heavy locks, would take hours to hacksaw thru them but they are cheap ones and old, can't find all the keys anyway so will look into the Kryptonite set. Thanks for the info.

Put an alarm on it in addition to whatever physical security you decide on. I have an alarm and a GPS Tracker on mine.

I just put full coverage insurance on mine. Will just get a new one if they steal it. :big-grin

Insurance not helping if you just drove hundreds of miles and have nothing to ride when u get there, take them 2 months to pay for it🤣,then they will only give u there value on it, but that's better than nothing, but you don't want to get it stole in the middle of a trip,
Don't think you would enjoy going over Hatfield on your 2 feet😂

You are correct, it would suck. But not the end of the world. What sucked was getting half way there, having the truck break down, paying a $1000 tow bill, plus my non-refundable pre-paid lodging fee's, losing leave from work and STILL not getting to go to Hatfields. Now that sucked :crying

As for security of the bike, I'll be honest. I'm not that worried about it. People that ride ATV's and Side by Sides are there to have a good time, not steal your stuff. They are much more like to help you rather than hurt you. However, I can certainly understand being concerned about it when you have to travel and lay-over in less than protected area's. In these situations, if you have the means, I suggest locking it up in an enclosed trailer.

I drilled 1/8 holes in pins and secured side panels with a hair pin type safety clip, works good

1 lock hitch so nobody can take off with your entire rig
2 install a hidden switch or disguised switch in the ignition wire circuit
