Truck project

I recently came into possession of a 1976 GMC 1500 pickup that was bought originally by my wife’s grandparents. It has 56k original miles, and is in incredible shape to be 47 years old.

It’s what was referred to as a “heavy half ton” with heavier springs, and 12 bolt rear end. It does have some rust in the places square bodies rust, but it’s very repairable.

I’m planning on replacing some body panels, and eventually repaint. The interior is original and in excellent condition. It has a 350 engine and TH350 transmission.

Wow, that's in great shape! Looks like it has ac too? I haven't seen one with the stock hubcaps and the smaller sportier looking mirror before. They're usually the dog dish hub caps(or rally wheels) and super trucker camper mirrors.

I had a 79 Stepside basket case as a daily many moons ago. I don't have any pics of course...

Thanks! The air conditioner actually works, and has been converted to the newer Freon. My wife’s grandfather passed in 1987, and the truck was rarely used after. It sat in an inclosed barn except for an occasional run to the dump.

My wife was going through the truck today and found a folder with the original paperwork from the dealership. It also contained the service records, and receipts from everything that’s been done to the truck. Talk about a lucky find!

Beautiful Classic Truck !!! You're very lucky!

But, you know Pres. Biden and friends will not be happy you're fixing up an old "gasser" and not spending your money on an electric hot rod. 😂

I had one as my first driver. Wish I still had it. Great truck. Gas mileage is around 10 with the two barrel carburetor and stock air cleaner housing. The 350 needs more air then it got with the factory air cleaner set up. Cheap fix is flip the air cleaner top cover over. This allows cover to have a gap around it but stil seals to the filter element. This will really wake that engine up and you should see mpg increase to around 15. Lol. When I did this to mine, my dad thought I put 4 barrel card on it. Was a drastic change in truck performance.

Good for you 303hunter. Looks to be in great shape. Will make a nice project for sure. My first truck was my grandfather's '86 GMC High Sierra. 350, 4 brl quadrajet and a 4 speed manual. I threw on a set of headers and glasspacks. It was a joy to listen to.

I used to put cards in the spokes of my bicycle as a kid. I picked up an easy 50hp and 5 seconds in the 1/4 mile.

Biden can kiss my fat rear end. No, I’d be charged with elderly abuse after he fell….

The truck is absolutely stock, including the stove choke assembly. I’m going to keep it as close to original as I can. I’ve got a bit of work to do, but eventually I’d like to enter this truck in a few shows. It’s still got all of the smog equipment that was original, and maintaining that equipment will be to my advantage.
Refinished the door panels using sanding sponges and vinyl dye. It was a time consuming job, but well worth the effort.

Got the new dash pad cover installed and the steering wheel refinished. It’s coming along little by little.
