UNI Filter malfunction

Hi, I have a 2008 Teryx carb model

I purchased one of the Uni Filter conversion that has the aluminum adapter.
Install was a snap.

I rode my Teryx for about 15 hours after the install and put it up last summer. I recently got it out and checked it over. I noticed the inside of the filter had a lot of dirt buildup.

The inside of the carb boots also had dirt.

It appears the filter failed to do its job. I looked close and the failure seems to have come where the rubber part of the filter joins the foam part based on the presence of dirt in that area.

Has this been an issue with anyone else?

I check my oil level and it was also low and the engine now smokes.

Needless to say, I am not very pleased as this UTV only has about 200 miles on it.

Part of the reason my engine blew was because of that crappy intake. I switched to a K&N style from DASA and don't have that problem any more. It still gets dirty but dirt doesn't get through the filter. You should clean it after every ride and keep a spare.

Had one on my 09 and my new one seem to be bullet proof never a prob in 4 years.

I will post pics when I get them off my other puter.
Filter was well oiled and professionally installed.
There is heavy dirt buildup in the seam where the rubber piece meets the foam. It extends into the inside of the filter.

It is like the process they used to mate the surfaces melted the foam enough to cause it to open the pores of the foam.

The intake was full of crap
The rubber carb boot had crap all in them.
Carb apertures have dirt.

I am very diappointed in this. I switched to this system to avoid this as the factory set up was inferior.

I think the Teryx was a good idea, but Kawasaki failed in its details.

1. Intake system
2. Oil gets sucked into the intake requiring the need for a catch can? WTF
3. No heat shields below the riders. Very poor design. Ride this thing in any temp above 75 degrees and you get fried from engine heat.
4. Noisy engine clatter. I am convinced that these type machines need to get rid of the whole belt driven golf cart affair and go to a gear driven design like older atv used to have. Maybe even a manual clutch with foot pedal like a car.
I saw on a custom golf cart forum where a guy transplanted a 300ex drive train into a ez go cart. Had videos of it and it seemed very nice with more effiecient drive train engagement.

For a $10k investment, I think one could do better with something other than a UTV.

This whole filter thing was the straw that broke the camel's back sop to speak on my view of the UTV world.

1. Intake system The intakes on all UTV's could be better but to keep costs down and to meet EPA regulations the manufactures are restrictedt
2. Oil gets sucked into the intake requiring the need for a catch can? WTF Not nearly as big of a problem on stock machines but does become and issue when adding modifications. Once you add a modification there is a good chance you will have to add more to make the first work correctly

Ride this thing in any temp above 75 degrees and you get fried from engine heat. 2008 was the first year and Kawasaki has made changes every year since to keep up with changes to the items we as users bring to their attention. They do listen and they do care to what we have to say

Maybe even a manual clutch with foot pedal like a car. A manual clutch would be the prefered choice for maybe less than 5% of us. The main attraction to UTVs is the ease of use with the centrifical clutch setups. Makes it easy for anyone to drive

It would be very difficult to purchase something new off the show room floor that could do the things that a modern UTV can. I'm sure if you wanted more power, manual clutch, less noise you can find a used Jeep but chances are the Jeep would cost alot more to maintain though

Sounds as if the filter itself was not maintained as often as needed for the riding conditions. Chances are the engine was starving for air and it tried to find the easiest path. The pictures also dictate that there was not enough oil on the filter due to how dry the dirt is that is inside the filter.

IMO there's No oil on that filter looks really dry

This was a UTV Crap kit.
Filter was oiled prior to use.
If any of you Vendors here would care to look closely @ the pics, you can see there is dust all over the outside of the filter showing it caught dust. Then you will see the pathway where the dirt made it into my engine. The seam where the rubber meets the foam.

After only 15 hrs. of use, this is what I get. I have been around bikes my entire life and had all brands of ATV and have always maintained everything I own. This was my first UTV and first time I ever had a filter failure.

If there was not enough oil on the filter, wouldn't the entire inside of the filter be dirty?

Sure it would. However the only part of the filter inside that is dirty is the seam where rubber meets foam. The rest of the filter is clean inside.

Product failure PERIOD!

UNI Filter will be contacted once the local Kawasaki Shop does a professional diagnosis including compression test and provides me with written proof advising why my engine is now smoking with less than 100 hrs. on the clock.

My UTV is used for offroading around my camp with my 6 yr old son. I rarely get over 30 mph and avoid mud when I can. I purchased this conversion kit because I did read up on the factory flaw of the stock filter system.

Lol. He's gonna need a new engine soon. I have been there with my 2008. Mine didn't last long after having the same problem. I now change oil and filter after 3 rides. Oil and filter service is so cheap compared to a rebuilt motor. I now own a 2012 and still follow that rule even though kawi has improved nite and day in 4 years. Good luck.

Hate to beat dead horse but I do not believe uni offers pre oiled filter. that dust on out side should look more like mud plus inner filter should be damp with oil I use blue filter oil so inside of mine is blue .uni is great product unless there is hole in it operator error .sorry dude it truly sucks I would be pissed off too
